Use the table for a quick answer, then check the relevant setup below before relying on a shortcut during a call.

01 · Zoom

The Zoom mute shortcut

Use Alt + A on Windows or Linux and Command + Shift + A on Mac in a Zoom desktop meeting. Zoom Phone has separate call shortcuts; use the meeting keys for meetings. The web app lists enabled spacebar temporary unmute, not these desktop toggle keys.

In desktop Settings → Keyboard shortcuts, inspect or change an assignment. On Windows and Mac, supported shortcuts can be made global using the checkbox beside them. Confirm that option for the action you want to use while another app is active. Zoom keyboard settings.

For push to talk, enable the spacebar temporary-unmute option in Settings → Audio. Start muted, bring the Zoom meeting window into focus, and hold Space while speaking. Host restrictions still apply. Zoom push-to-talk setup.

03 · Google Meet

With your Meet meeting page active, use Ctrl + D on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command + D on Mac. Outside the meeting page, your browser can handle that combination differently. Meet keyboard controls.

Turn on Push to talk in Meet's Audio settings to hold Space for a temporary reply. It is off by default. Release Space to return to mute.

Google notes that some Windows screen-reader setups give Space another function. If that affects you, use the toggle shortcut or microphone control instead. Meet accessibility and push-to-talk guidance.

04 · Discord

  2. Under Input Mode, select Push to Talk.

When a shortcut does nothing

Check the context before changing the keys

  1. Focus the meeting. Switch to its window or browser tab. Move out of a chat box or shared content, then try again.
  2. Check your saved assignment. An edited keybind or a different app edition can change the default. Use the app's own shortcut list as the final reference.
  3. Check temporary-unmute settings. Push to talk often needs to be enabled separately. Start muted and watch the microphone icon while holding and releasing the keys.
  4. Separate a mute problem from a microphone problem. If the app shows you as unmuted but no one hears you, check the selected input, browser or system microphone permissions, and any physical mute switch.

Our microphone test and recorder can help check whether this browser receives audio from your mic. Your meeting app still needs its own input and permissions checked.

Mute shortcut questions

Is there one mute shortcut that works in every app?

No. Zoom, Meet, Teams, and Slack use different defaults. Some desktop apps offer global shortcuts, but that setting belongs to the app. Check which application and microphone a control actually affects.

What is the difference between toggle mute and push to talk?

Toggle mute changes state each time you press the shortcut. Push to talk transmits while you hold a key and returns to mute when you release it, sometimes after a configured delay. Enable the feature and verify the behavior before a meeting.

Why does the shortcut work only when the meeting is open?

Many shortcuts are handled by the active window or browser tab. Some desktop apps let you enable a global assignment; browser shortcuts generally depend on focus. Zoom's temporary spacebar unmute and Discord's browser PTT explicitly require focus. See each app's setup above.

Can I use a keyboard shortcut if the host has muted me?

A shortcut does not bypass meeting permissions. If your meeting blocks participants from unmuting, use its raise-hand or chat controls to ask the host for permission to speak.

Does this guide control my microphone?

No. This page is a reference and does not request microphone access or send keys to another app. The optional Copy button copies the displayed reference to your clipboard.
