Home OBS Studio Configuration

We offer Level 3 support for OBS Studio on Windows, macOS, and Linux. MuteMe can control your OBS audio sources, sync mute/unmute status, and sync LED indicators with your OBS streaming or recording state. Unlike Teams, OBS requires you to enable its built-in WebSocket API to allow secure communication with third-party apps like MuteMe. This guide will walk you through the required OBS configuration and MuteMe setup.

OBS Studio Settings (Required First Step)

Good news! OBS Studio v28.0.0 and later includes a native WebSocket Server built directly into the application. No third-party plugins or external services are required.

To enable MuteMe to communicate with OBS, you must first activate the WebSocket API inside OBS Studio:

  1. Open OBS Studio on your computer.
  2. In the top menu, navigate to Tools > WebSocket Server Settings.
  3. Check the box for Enable WebSocket Server.
  4. Set a strong password (recommended for security). MuteMe will require this password to connect.
  5. Leave the port as 4455 (default) unless you have a specific reason to change it.
  6. Click OK to save your settings.

MuteMe App Configuration

Once OBS is configured, connect MuteMe to your OBS instance:

  • Open the MuteMe app and click on the gear icon to access settings.
  • Select App Sync Settings and choose OBS Studio.
  • If you do not see OBS Studio click the Modify button and then enable it. Hit the back button at the top to get back to the sync screen.
  • Set the sync level to Level 3 for full audio control and LED synchronization.
  • Enter the following connection details:
    • Host: 127.0.0.1 or localhost (required for local machine communication)
    • Port: 4455 (or the custom port you set in OBS)
    • Password: The password you created in OBS WebSocket Settings
  • Click Apply to verify the link. The MuteMe App should connect to OBS.
  • The integration will automatically detect when OBS is running and you're streaming or recording.

Network & Security Notes

  • Localhost Bypasses Firewalls: Because MuteMe connects via 127.0.0.1, traffic never leaves your machine. Standard host-based firewalls (Windows Defender, macOS Application Firewall, Linux ufw/firewalld) allow loopback traffic by default. No firewall configuration is required.
  • Password Security: The OBS WebSocket API transmits audio control commands. Always use a strong, unique password and never share it publicly. This password is not secure. OBS and the MuteMe store these passwords as plain text.
  • Antivirus & App Execution: While firewalls don't block localhost, some security suites may flag or quarantine OBS/MuteMe if they detect unexpected network activity. Ensure your antivirus isn't blocking application execution or localhost WebSocket ports.

Troubleshooting

MuteMe can't connect to OBS

  • Verify that Enable WebSocket Server is checked in OBS > Tools > WebSocket Server Settings.
  • Ensure the password in MuteMe matches exactly what's set in OBS (case-sensitive).
  • Confirm OBS is running before launching MuteMe.
  • Check that your antivirus isn't quarantining OBS Studio or MuteMe.

MuteMe isn't detecting OBS mute state or not syncing LEDs

  • Verify that OBS is set to Level 3 in MuteMe's App Sync Settings.
  • Make sure MuteMe is connected and your OBS audio sources are properly routed through OBS's audio mixer.
  • Restart both OBS and the MuteMe app if the connection drops unexpectedly.

OBS WebSocket settings are greyed out or missing

  • You may be running an older version of OBS. OBS 28.0.0+ includes native WebSocket support.
  • Update OBS Studio to the latest version via your operating system's package manager or the official OBS website.

Windows Setup & Security

  • Windows Defender Firewall allows loopback traffic by default. No firewall rules are needed for 127.0.0.1.

macOS Setup & Security

  • The macOS Application Firewall does not block localhost traffic by default. No firewall configuration is required.
  • Ensure both OBS Studio and MuteMe are downloaded from official sources (OBSProject.com and MuteMe.com) to avoid quarantine flags.

Linux Setup & Security

  • Standard Linux firewalls (ufw, firewalld, nftables) explicitly allow loopback traffic by default. No firewall rules are needed for 127.0.0.1.
  • Use the official OBS Studio package (`.deb`, `.rpm`, or official AppImage). Flatpak or Snap versions use sandboxing that may restrict localhost WebSocket communication.
  • Both OBS Studio and MuteMe must run under the same user account to avoid permission conflicts.
