MuteMe · Setup & support
Check whether your microphone supports OS mute.
MuteMe’s system-level control depends on the microphone, driver and operating system. Some inputs do not expose a usable mute control.

- The actual audio
- Separate controls
- System microphone and meeting app
Confirm the input and behavior
Choose the same microphone in the meeting app and in MuteMe’s Microphone Settings. Enable Control this microphone with MuteMe, then test in a private call with someone who can confirm whether your audio stops.
A changed device LED or app indicator alone does not establish that the microphone stopped transmitting. Do not confuse disabling a device with muting its input.
macOS: inspect the available input controls
Open Audio MIDI Setup, select the audio device and inspect its input controls. The available options depend on the device. If a Mute control is unavailable or disabled, it is a sign that this path does not expose input mute control; lowering volume is a different operation and still needs an audio check.
Windows: test the selected device
Check the correct input and its manufacturer’s current driver, then test actual call audio. Windows control-panel options vary by device and driver; there is no single screen that proves compatibility for every microphone.
Choose a supported alternative
If system-level mute fails, try another microphone or use the meeting app’s own mute control. A supported, correctly configured Level 2 or Level 3 integration may still control that app’s mute button, but verify it in the specific app before relying on it. See platform compatibility and setup.
App-button mute only applies within that meeting app. It is not a guarantee that every other program has stopped using the microphone.
Previously reported configurations
Hardware mentioned in the older troubleshooting guide
Past reports included some Realtek microphones in Gateway PCs on Windows 11, RØDE NT and Shure microphones on macOS, Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 Gen 2 Bluetooth microphones and HyperX Cloud headsets. These are historical configuration reports, not a current blanket verdict on every model, driver or connection method. Include the precise model, OS and driver when reporting your result.
