Why Webex may keep the microphone in use.
Webex can listen for nearby room devices even when you are not in a meeting. That background detection can affect a microphone-in-use signal.
Room-device detection also uses the microphone.
Webex uses ultrasound to discover nearby room devices. If it is configured to listen continuously, your operating system can report microphone use outside a call. That does not, by itself, mean you are transmitting meeting audio.
MuteMe’s microphone-use detection cannot always distinguish room-device discovery from an active meeting. Check the meeting app’s own state when troubleshooting.
Choose when Webex listens.
Open device discovery settings
In Webex settings, find the device discovery or connection preferences. Names vary by version; older versions may refer to using ultrasound.
Use a manual option if appropriate
If you do not need continuous discovery, choose Use my microphone when I search for devices, or Do not use my microphone and search by room or device name.
Check the result
Close any call, check the operating system’s microphone indicator, then test a meeting. Changing discovery behavior affects automatic room-device pairing. If your organization manages this setting, ask its IT team before changing it.
Continue with meeting setup.
The Webex setup guide covers the meeting integration. If the microphone remains active, also check other apps that may be using it.
Original issue note: 10:45PM - PST - September 24, 2023. Device-discovery options were checked against Webex’s current documentation.
