Using an Original from batches 001–003

Early MuteMe hardware can still use supported app features, but its USB and touch components differ from later generations.

Start with the batch on your device

Use the batch information on the device or provide a photo to Support if you are unsure. Do not identify the batch from its appearance or seller listing alone. The earliest Kickstarter-era devices evolved from prototypes and a MicroUSB pre-production model to USB-C retail hardware.

Work around a connection problem

  • Connect directly to the computer with a known working data cable before testing a hub or dock.
  • Try another cable or USB port if detection, sleep/wake or lighting is inconsistent. Some early USB hardware is less tolerant of particular cables and hubs.
  • Keep the MuteMe app current. A firmware update cannot replace the soldered touch sensor or USB controller.

What changed in later hardware

Later batches introduced a different USB module, touch-sensing changes, smoother lighting behavior and revised sleep/wake handling. The original comparison quoted touch examples of 50 ms versus 500 ms and a 10× startup improvement. Those are historical hardware-comparison figures, not a new measurement or a guarantee for every system.

Physical updates also changed internal power LEDs, the logo and packaging. Software can add compatible features to older hardware, but it cannot remove all hardware limitations.

Update legacy firmware only when needed

If your device works normally, the original guidance does not recommend flashing it merely because it is old. For flickering, unresponsive touch or unexpected dimming, ask Support whether the legacy update is appropriate before proceeding.

Do not use the mass-storage firmware procedure for batch 004+ devices on a batch 001–003 device.
