Inicio Manual Firmware Updates

Updating the firmware on your device manually can be useful when you are trying to accomplish something specific or load a special firmware file. This support page explores the steps for a Manual Firmware Update for all batch 004+ and Mini devices. We also go over the different bootloader options and provide insights on selecting the appropriate one for your needs.

Steps for Manual Firmware Update

  1. Prepare Your Device: Ensure your device is connected directly to your computer with a high quality, short (3ft or less) data cable and not via a USB hub.
  2. Trigger Bootloader: Go to settings, Diagnostic Tools, and click on the Manual Firmware Update button. Then follow the prompts, choose between Regular Bootloader Mode or Firmware Erase Mode based on your needs. You can also use the Bootloader Tool at the bottom of this page.
  3. Execute the Update: Once the device is in bootloader mode, follow instructions outlined here to update the firmware to a version that you want.

The ERASE bootloader option is only available on batch 004+ or Mini devices with the latest firmware. With factory firmware, you only have the regular bootloader mode.

Understanding Bootloader Options

The bootloader is a piece of software responsible for initializing the device's hardware and launching the main firmware, it is primary used when a device firmware update is needed. For all updated batch 004+ devices and minis we support two primary bootloader modes. A "Regular Bootloader Mode" and "Firmware Erase Mode".

Regular Bootloader Mode:

  • Function: Enables the device to enter the bootloader as a USB Drive and awaits firmware update commands.
  • Exit Strategy: Simply restart the device by unplugging and replugging, or proceed with the firmware update to exit this mode.

Firmware Erase Mode:

  • Function: Completely erases the device's existing firmware, making it appear as a USB drive (mass storage device) for new firmware installation.
  • Usage: Ideal for updating the device when the regular option does not work, or when you may not have removable USB storage permissions on your current system and need to update the device on a different system.
  • Exit Strategy: Install new firmware; the device remains in this mode until new firmware is written.

Conclusion

Understanding the functionalities and proper applications of bootloader options can significantly enhance your experience with manual firmware updates. Whether you're performing routine maintenance or recovering a device, selecting the appropriate bootloader mode ensures a smooth update process.
