Set up Microsoft Teams with MuteMe

Use the current desktop integration to control your microphone from MuteMe or Teams, with both showing the same mute state.

Use the current desktop integration

Install the current MuteMe app and use the Microsoft Teams desktop app. MuteMe’s current integration does not require a Teams API token or the old device-pairing workflow, and is intended for both free and paid Teams accounts.

Teams running in a browser is a different client. Do not assume these native integration steps provide two-way sync with a Teams browser tab. Teams Classic is retired; use the current Teams client rather than downgrading MuteMe to keep an obsolete client running.

Enable Teams in MuteMe

Open MuteMe settings and choose App Sync Settings. If Teams is missing, select Modify, enable it, and return to the integration list. Expand Teams and set Sync Level to Level 3 for two-way mute status. Keep the MuteMe app running.

Select the microphone or headset you use in Teams and configure MuteMe to control the same input. Level 3 reads mute changes made inside Teams as well as sending changes from MuteMe.

Windows setup

  1. Open the desktop meeting

Start or join a Teams meeting in the desktop app. Keep the meeting window open while you verify detection; an idle Teams chat window is not a meeting.

  2. Check microphone access

Choose the correct microphone in Teams’ audio/device settings. If Teams cannot hear it, check Windows microphone permission for Teams and desktop apps. The native MuteMe integration does not require a blanket permission to access screen content.

  3. Verify detection

In MuteMe’s Teams integration, check whether the meeting is detected. If it is not, restore the meeting window from the taskbar and retest.

macOS setup

Use the Teams desktop app, join a meeting, and select the same microphone that MuteMe controls. Keep the meeting window open for the first test. If detection is missing, restore the window from the Dock and check the Accessibility permission below.

Allow MuteMe on your Mac

Use MuteMe’s guided request first. When MuteMe shows macOS Permissions Needed, select Grant Permissions and follow its prompts. MuteMe may restart automatically after Accessibility is granted.

If the guided flow directs you there, or access is still missing, open Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and enable the installed MuteMe app. If it is missing, use the add button to select it from Applications.

Automation is separate. If MuteMe specifically requests it for a feature you use, follow that prompt. To review a missing or denied request, open Privacy & Security → Automation → MuteMe → System Events. You do not need to enable every entry or grant Screen Recording or Full Disk Access just for this integration. See the macOS permissions guide if access does not persist.

Confirm both directions

  1. Toggle from MuteMe

In a private test meeting, mute and unmute using your device and check Teams’ microphone button.

  2. Toggle from Teams

Click the microphone button in Teams and check that MuteMe follows. If the device sends changes but does not follow Teams, recheck Level 3.

  3. If sync stops

Confirm MuteMe is running, the device is connected, and the meeting—not only the Teams app—is open. Restore the meeting window, recheck macOS Accessibility if applicable, and restart both apps after updating. Meeting or administrator restrictions may prevent unmuting and cannot be overridden by MuteMe.

Legacy setup: before MuteMe 0.27.2

View the older Teams API pairing steps

Historical reference only. Update MuteMe and use the current setup above. The following workflow depends on a Teams version and account that still expose the third-party device API; it is not a fallback guaranteed to work today.

  1. Connect your MuteMe device and run the older MuteMe app.
  2. In Teams desktop, open Settings and more → Settings → Privacy → Third-party app API → Manage API.
  3. Enable the API if the option is available, then join a meeting.
  4. Press your device and accept the connection request only if it is the MuteMe connection you initiated. Microsoft’s documentation describes a Generate option if an API token is empty.

If Manage API is disabled or missing, contact your organization’s administrator rather than bypassing policy. MuteMe’s earlier API guidance covered paid Teams accounts; it should not be used to describe the current native integration.

About the transition

MuteMe moved to native accessibility-based control so the current integration does not depend on the older Teams device API. For the original announcement, read our Teams integration update.
